Introduced in Asia in the 6th century BC, yin and yang is a popular 2-player casino game that is still played today. The aim of the game is to form as many pairs of yin and yang symbols as possible. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.
The game is played with a deck of 36 cards, comprising of 3 suits (hearts, clubs, spades) and 9 ranks (Ace to 9). The cards are shuffled and each player is dealt 9 cards, face down. The remaining card is placed face up in the middle of the table to start the discard pile. The player left of the dealer starts by playing any card from their hand, followed by the player on their right. Cards of the same rank as your original card are wild and can be used to form pairs with any other card. When both players have no cards left in their hand, the player who has played the highest ranking card starts the next turn. If both players have played equal ranking cards, then it's a tie and both players must re-deal.
The aim of the game is to form as many pairs of yin and yang symbols as possible. Pairs can be formed with either two matching rank or two matching suits. For example, if you play a three of hearts, then any three of clubs, diamonds or spades can be paired with it to form a yin and yang symbol. If you play a two of clubs, then any two suited cards (e.g. two twos of diamonds) can be paired together to form a yin and yang symbol. However, if you play a two of spades, then only another two of spades can be paired with it.
The following example shows how the game would be played:
Player 1: Ace of hearts (wild) Player 2: Two of clubs
Player 1 plays Ace of hearts from their hand and then discards any other card. Player 2 must now play a card from their hand (they cannot use Ace of hearts). They play Two of clubs which can now be paired with Ace of hearts to form a yin and yang symbol. As Player 1 also has no more cards left in their hand, this ends that particular turn. Player 1: 7 Hearts Player 2: King Clubs
Both players now draw one new card from the stock so they both have 10 cards again. Player 1 plays 7 Hearts from their hand which can now be paired with King Clubs to form a pair (either rank or suit type will work). As Player 2 also has no more cards left in their hand, this ends that particular turn."
